USS FIRM (MSO - 444)

1967

FIRM competed Interim dry docking, including replacement of the port shaft, at SRF Subic and departed Subic Bay, R. P. 26 January 1967 for the second Market Time patrol of the 1966-67 Western Pacific deployment. After thirty days on patrol in the combat zone of the Republic of Viet­nam, FIRM returned to Subic Bay for upkeep and for the annual Mainten­ance and Management Inspection. On 11 March, FIRM departed for the Is­land of Corregidor in Manila Bay for participation in Operation SIYASAT with other units of Mine Division SEVENTY-TWO and with surface units of the SEATO Navies. On 17 March, after a night’s liberty in Manila, FIRM returned to Subic Bay for a one-week upkeep period in preparation for the third and final Market Tim patrol of the deployment.

After thirty-six days on station, FIRM departed Vietnamese waters and arrived in Hong Kong on 11 May for five days of rest and relaxation. FIRM then spent three weeks in Subic Bay before departing on 8 June for the long-awaited return trip to Long Beach, California. FIRM arrived in Long Beach on 28 July after a 15-day upkeep period In Guam, M.I., fuel stops in Kwajalein Atoll and Johnston Island and an overnight stay In Pearl Harbor.

Despite the fact that FIRM had just returned from a ten and one-half month Western Pacific deployment, the pace did not ease once In CONUS. On 14 August the San Francisco Insurv Sub-board Inspected FIRM in preparation for FIRM’s regular over-haul scheduled for 18 September at Harbor Boat Building Company, Terminal Island, California. Prior to entering the shipyard, FIRM journeyed to Los Angeles Harbor, Wilmington, and took an active part in the Labor Day weekend activities that celebrated the 186th birthday of the City of Los Angeles. FIRM then entered Harbor Boat on 18 September and completed overhaul on 5 December. The inport phase of FIRMs annual MCM/RFT commenced and on 22 December FIRM moored at pier nine, Long Beach Naval Station, Long Beach California for a ten day holiday leave and upkeep period which brought to a close the grueling, hectic and test-paced operational year that was 1967.

It was a year of self-satisfaction and accomplishment, however. FIRM was awarded a National Defense Medal as well as a second Vietnam Service Medal and a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal for participating in com­bat operations in Southeast Asia. Also FIRM, in competition with other ships of Mine Division SEVENTY-TWO was nominated by Commander Mine Div­ision SEVENTY-TWO for the Squadron “E”.
